Lunch Program Costs Push CCSD2 Toward Changes

The Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2) has had to face some hard realities concerning its lunch program.

It can no longer be free.

The CCSD2 school board is still weighing whether it will stay with the USDA program it is currently in.

Two Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School juniors will trade their classroom seats for a hands-on lesson in government this summer, as Lily Borah and Elizabeth Chaffin head to Cheyenne to represent their school at Wyoming Girls State, a weeklong leadership and citizenship program sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary.

John Tessitore came to the Rawlins Middle School to talk to 6th graders.

“This is our third time in Rawlins and this is the first time working with 6th graders,” Tessitore said, who is the founder and Executive Director of the JCK (John Cleaver Kelly) Foundation. “We are here to make kids feel less alone. The JCK Foundation helps this happen.”

HEM FFCLA Sending Five to Nationals

The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow High School Family, Career, Community, Leaders of America (FCCLA) won big at State. There were four 1st place winners and a 2nd place. All are going to Nationals in Washington D.C.

The 2026 National FCCLA competitors are 

Corbin Williams for personal finance- 1st place.

Sammee Widdison for repurpose design- 2nd place.

Japan Leaves its Mark on HEM Student

Ashellia (Ash) Hoffman is a student at Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) student who is in her senior year. She is a member of the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) and has won awards for her sewing abilities.

She has been doing it for seven years.

A study led by McKenna Litynski, a recent Ph.D. graduate in anthropology and adjunct assistant professor at the University of Wyoming, confirms that ancient needles and awls enabled humans to survive in cold climates and shows these tools served a variety of purposes beyond clothing production, from medicine to ceremony.
