Robert E. “Bob” Bentsen, fondly known as “Bubba,” passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 1, 2026, in Rawlins, Wyoming. He was born on May 13, 1938, in Rock Springs, Wyoming, and leaves behind a legacy filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories that will carry on within the hearts of his family and friends.
A dedicated family man and a proud father, Bob found joy in every moment spent with his loved ones. His life was marked by simple yet profound joys, such as family fishing trips—the kind that became family legends. One such trip to Savery Creek remains unforgettable, where a few beers and some kind smiles granted him access, leading to humor-filled nights recounting a bear scare that would forever live in the memory of his wife and their children.
Bob’s ability to connect with his family extended beyond mere moments of tradition; his infectious spirit shone during countless games of dice, Yahtzee, and cards that brought everyone together for hours of fun. He would toss the ball with his sons, Dennis and Rick, who remember the playful laughter that echoed through the broken window, an outcome of perhaps the last game of catch shared with dad. Engaging with his grandchildren, he delighted in teasing them, often weaving a light-hearted story with Bobbi about a makeshift moose call from a soda can.
His deep passion for sports, especially the Yankees and Broncos, was a vital part of family life, where shared moments of cheering for their favorite teams built strong bonds. He reveled in the camaraderie of Monday Night Football, finding joy not just in the games but in gathering the family around the television, establishing traditions filled with noise, excitement, and love.
Bob’s connection to the community was equally significant. After graduating from Rawlins High School in 1956 and completing one year at BYU, he devoted 43 years of his life to the Union Pacific Railroad—one of his proudest accomplishments. His hardworking nature reflected his dedication to providing for his loved ones, enabling him to raise a beautiful family, an achievement he cherished deeply.
Aside from work, Bob was an avid golfer, known for sharing many delightful moments on the greens. He enjoyed evenings dancing at the Elks, where laughter met relaxation in the comforting atmosphere of companionship. He had a unique way of showing love through humor, evidenced by the whimsical nicknames he bestowed upon friends and family.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Merri Bentsen, son Dennis (Patty) Bentsen, daughter Bobbi Reed, stepdaughter Kim (Ted) Croy, sister Jane Clegg, and a multitude of grandchildren—11 in total—along with 22 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Their lives are richer for having had him as a cornerstone, a steadfast presence through the years.
Bob was preceded in death by his loving parents, his first wife Judy Bentsen, brother Jimmy Bentsen, son Rick Bentsen, stepson Kent Holloway, and grandson Adam Reed. The memories of their times together remain a treasure that will continue to bring warmth and smiles for generations to come.
A memorial service to honor Bob’s life will take place on February 21, 2026, at the Rawlins Elks Lodge #609, allowing family and friends to gather in reflection and celebration of a life well-lived.
