Carbon County is well known for its charitable heart. As the autumn gives way to the snows of winter. Thanksgiving moves us on to the Advent season and start our Christmas countdowns. And so now do we remember that there are many people less fortunate. Even here where family, friends and neighbors pull double and even triple duty there is always a need.

Thanksgiving tradition lives on

Mike’s Big City Steakhouse in Rawlins cooked 85 turkeys for this Thanksgiving to feed anyone who wanted a turkey dinner between the hours of 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. which included delivering a meal to the door.

This tradition has been going on since the 1970s when owner Mike Lujan’s mother started making sure people got fed on Thanksgiving day.

Mike’s Big City heart for Vets

Mike Lujan, owner of Mike’s Big City Steakhouse (Big City), welcomed all vets who came through his doors with a free dinner on Veterans Day this past Saturday night. The venue was packed. There was not a free table except one.

Three Veterans reflect on their Military service

Donald Mayfield said he is not an ex-marine, but rather a marine even though it has been since the Korean War that he served.

“Once a marine, always a marine,” Mayfield laughed. “I was in the military from 1954 until 1962. Back then you served eight years. I was three years in active duty and five years in the active reserve.”
