In February of 2024, a fatal avalanche in the Sierra Madre Range shook our close-knit community to its core. With the support of our citizens here in Carbon County, the tragic loss we experienced that winter has since transformed into a powerful movement for avalanche education, preparedness, and public safety here in Carbon County’s mountain backcountry.

Vestas, a company with several wind turbine sites throughout Wyoming, recently donated $1,000 to the Wee Folks Preschool in Hanna.

Those present for the donation included Casey Unger and Klint Strong of Vestas, along with Britany Forester and Becky Meyer from Wee Folks. Strong, who serves as the site manager, coordinated the donation.

“We did pretty well,” Lucy Schofield, director and a founder of the Medicine Bow Food Pantry, said of her garage sale. “We had one person give us a tip on a piece of furniture that would have made the day worthwhile by that one transaction.”

Crews from the City of Rawlins, joined by Councilmember Patterson, spent Thursday morning cleaning up Interstate 80 as part of the WYDOT Adopt-A-Highway program.

Twenty-five volunteers picked up 480 pounds of trash along the stretch of highway that runs through town under clear blue skies.
